Suspected source: Firefighting foam used at Hampton Bays Fire Station
As part of sampling conducted under the EPA’s Third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3), the Hampton Bays Water District detected PFOA and PFOS in the raw water serving its Well 1-1. The well was taken off-line in May 2016, and testing was then expanded to the other two wells at the well field, both of which showed PFOS and PFOA, resulting in the closure of those wells in the summer and fall of 2017 (Napoli Shkolnik, 2018).
The Southhampton Town Board, which serves as the commissioners of the water district, approved the spending of $1 million to install carbon filtration systems on the affected wells. The work is expected to reach completion by June 2018 (Bernocco, 2018).
The Town of Southhampton and the Hampton Bays Water District have filed a lawsuit against five manufacturers of firefighting foams containing PFAS compounds.
